๐ด Samsung Indefinitely Delays HBM5E Production โ AI's Memory Bottleneck Just Got Worse
Every AI model needs massive amounts of ultra-fast memory to think. The chips that provide it โ called HBM โ are already the scarcest component in the AI industry. Only three companies on Earth can make them.
Now one of those three just hit the brakes.
Korean media reports that Samsung has indefinitely postponed mass production of HBM5E, its next-generation high-bandwidth memory chip. The reason: yield rates on the underlying D1d DRAM process โ the raw material for HBM5E โ haven't met internal targets.
This means Samsung can't produce enough working chips per wafer to make manufacturing economically viable.
๐ฏ Why this matters:
- HBM is the beating heart of every AI GPU โ from NVIDIA's Blackwell to AMD's Instinct
- SK Hynix, Samsung's Korean rival, is pulling further ahead in the HBM race
- With only SK Hynix and Micron left at full capacity, supply tightens and prices could spike
- NVIDIA, Google, and AMD all need HBM5E for their next-gen AI chips in 2027
Think of it this way: if AI is a Formula 1 race, HBM is the specialized fuel. The world's second-largest fuel producer just said "we can't get the formula right โ no timeline for when we will." Every team on the grid now has to fight over what's left.
The AI war isn't won with software alone โ whoever controls the components controls the game.
